Open Letter to Hip-Hop (II)

The following is the second open letter from four icons of the entertainment industry. If you haven't read the first open letter, click here for your viewing pleasure.

Dear Young America,

It ain't over, until it's over. There is still so much work to be done. The thrill of victory is just one week away. We hear it in the streets, we feel it in our hearts and it's burning in our souls. Together we have successfully registered the most young voters in the history of the modern political process. We called a State Of Emergency on October 3rd at 6:00AM and our culture stood up and recognized the importance of registering millions of voters. From 1st time voters who have just come of age to vote, to those who are participating for the 1st time in the voting process. Your commitment to Change will continue to ring across our America, because we all are in the Right State Of Mind

Where it stands today, we are on the verge of making history, the kind of history that will be a part of our culture's legacy. The kind of history that bridges the gap between race, religion and culture, the kind of history that will ignite a light that shines bright from generation to generation, screaming that our voice does matter and our vote does count. The kind of history that will enable the next generation of leaders to encourage vision, not division, to encourage hope, not hopelessness, to encourage the power of the people, not the power politics of the few.

With only 7 days left before we vote for change, let's hold ourselves accountable and responsible. No more excuses, no more mistakes and no more time to waste. If you have the opportunity to vote early in your state then vote today. If you are voting on November 4th, make preparation today. Bring your family and friends and plan for the party at the poles. Make November 4th the day we celebrate change - The day we celebrate freedom of choice. The day we celebrate power of all people. Let's all come together on November 4th, because it's a family reunion. It's our time and we are all in the Right State Of Mind.

We have 7 days to Vote for Change. 7 days to Vote to Make History. We can not slow down. We can not let up. We must push through to history until the final vote is cast and the last ballot is counted. We can, we must, and we will Make It Happen. Vote Obama/Biden on November 4th.

God Bless,
Diddy
Jay-Z
Mary J. Blige

Illegal Downloading Just Got Tougher

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush signed a bill on Monday which toughens penalties for copyright infringement, music and movie piracy and creates a high-level position of intellectual property czar.

The bill, which has been welcomed by trade groups such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), was one of a number of pieces of legislation signed by the president on Monday, the White House said.

The bill tightens civil and criminal intellectual property laws, imposes stricter penalties on violators and establishes the position of a White House-based "Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator."

It provides the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation with more resources to fight intellectual property crimes, which are estimated to cost US businesses as much as 250 billion dollars a year.

RIAA chairman Mitch Bainwol welcomed the new law after it passed the House of Representatives saying it was "music to the ears of all those who care about strengthening American creativity and jobs."

Paper Trail Makes History!!!!!

“PAPER TRAIL,” the new album from Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist T.I., has made a phenomenal arrival atop the Billboard 200, marking the multiple Grammy Award-winning superstar’s third consecutive #1 chart entry (following 2006’s platinum-certified “KING” and 2007’s platinum-certified “T.I. VS. T.I.P.”). With total first-week sales in excess of 568,000, “PAPER TRAIL” also enters at #1 on a number of additional Billboard charts, including “Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums,” “Top Rap Albums,” and “Top Digital Albums.” The album’s unparalleled first-week sales success represents a personal best for T.I., as well as Atlantic Records’ biggest-ever one-week scan since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

As if all that weren’t enough, T.I. has literally exploded into the top spot on Billboard’s “Hot 100” with “Live Your Life (Feat. Rihanna),” the second single from “PAPER TRAIL.” In only its second week on the chart, the single has ascended into the pole position from last week’s ranking at #80 – the biggest-ever one-week leap to the top. The #1 success of “Live Your Life” shatters the previous record for largest ascent to #1 – a feat set just six weeks ago by T.I.’s own “Whatever You Like,” the RIAA platinum certified first single from “PAPER TRAIL.” That track rocketed to #1 from #71 the week of September 6th and has remained there until this week. This remarkable achievement establishes T.I. as the first artist to replace himself at #1 since Usher in 2004.

Congratulations to T.I., Jason Geter, and Grand Hustle on your amazing accomplishments!

Problem File: Dave Young ft. 50 Cent - "Drinkin', Smokin'" (Produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League)

Here's a new joint from Dave Young ft. 50 Cent called "Drinkin', Smokin'". Dave Young is the first artist signed to Mary J. Blige's Matriarch Records. Not only is he a talented artist, but songwriter and performer as well. Dave is a Grammy award-winning songwriter who has penned songs for Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, LeToya Luckett, and Dave Hollister. Dave is also currently out on the "Soul Love Tour" with Mary J. Blige and Robin Thicke. "Drinkin', Smokin'" was written by Dave and produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. When asked about the song, Dave states: "Drinkin' & Smokin'" (featuring 50 Cent) is "not about promoting those activities...more describing what men might do when they're trying to get over the end of a relationship".

PHEW! Copyright Royalty Board rules to keep the current stat rate

Last Friday the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) ruled to keep the current statutory rate of 9.1 cents.

This decision should have us all breathing a sigh of relief- Here’s why:

The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), who represents the interests of songwriters and publishers, wanted an increase in the rate from the current 9.1 cents to 12.5 cents. An increase would have been nice- but perhaps not so realistic.

On the flipside, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the folks who issue your records platinum and/or gold, wanted the rate reduced to 6 cents.

During the NMPA, RIAA drama, Apple appealed to CRB saying that an increase in the rate could force online retailers like Itunes to close.

This is a significant win for us. A reduction in rates could have been a disaster in an industry already struggling with declining sales and rampant piracy.

In case, you wondering how this directly impacts you- that 9.1 cents stat rate is the money owed to the songwriters and publishers of a song when an album is bought, a single is downloaded, or even a ringtone is bought. A reduction in that 9.1 cents may sound small- but could be the difference in thousands of dollars hitting your account...
